Where are you headed, Girlfriend?

I am writing this note to you the day before I leave for a trip. Even for a seasoned traveler, there are thousands of things that could possibly go wrong on a trip: delays, accidents, missed flights, lost luggage, bad food and the list goes on, BUT there are thousands of wonderful things that could happen: time spent with family and friends, new experiences, beautiful sites, peaceful moments away from the normal routine and the list goes on.

Jeremiah 29:11 is a favorite verse for many: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” It is such an encouragement to know God is making plans for our lives; that He is FOR us; that He wants to give us hope. Many times however the verse is pulled from the page without looking at the context. These wonderful words follow some of the worst news Jeremiah could have given his audience. They were going to be in captivity for 70 years so most would not return home in their lifetime. When we feel like we are stuck in a place in our life journey or when a particularly difficult stage seems long or meaningless we need this reminder that we are not forgotten by our Father God. He has plans for us!

We also need constant reminder that these plans are not just for today, or this year – these are eternal plans, with everlasting hope and a future that lasts far beyond our next travel destination. While we certainly want to make the most of the days we are given in this life and use them for God’s glory, we don’t need to feel pressured to fit it all in or complete a giant bucket list. When we are saved we are given eternal life. When we leave this earth we will be forever with God and there will be a new heaven and a new earth to explore. The wonders there will far exceed any earthly dream vacation.

So dear girlfriend, wherever this week, month, or year takes you, if you belong to God then He has your travel itinerary planned out and it is all for your good and His glory.

Trust God! Trust His Plan!
