First Grade: English
First Grade encompasses the bulk of phonics instruction. It will build on all of the letter/sound associations which were introduced/mastered in Kindergarten. In addition to the individual letter/sound associations, areas of emphasis will include: long and short vowel sounds, consonant blends, digraphs, diphthongs, generalizations of phonics rules, comprehension skills, contractions, compound words, syllabication, and recognition of sight words. The English content area also includes spelling and handwriting. The goal of handwriting instruction is that each student will follow proper letter formation and will write legibly.
