Kindergarten: Reading The major emphasis for beginning reading is on phonics. Students learn to recognize and sequence the alphabet. After sounds are introduced then word families begin. Reading books begin with picture books to ensure success in the first formal reading experience. It is not necessary for K-5 students to learn phonics well enough to read by the end of the kindergarten year, although many of them do.
