| Bible The title of the text for grade five Bible is Possessing the Land. A survey of the Old Testament is the basis of this study. Beginning in Genesis, students will gain a clearer perspective of how the stories of the Old Testament fit together in one pattern. One of the primary goals is to allow the Holy Spirit to work in the lives of the students to conform them to the image of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). Therefore, a strong emphasis is placed on character development with practical lessons enabling students to make life-changing decisions for themselves even at a young age. Weekly Chapel services, Scripture memorization and daily prayer is also included. |
Mathematics Elementary mathematics begins with the most basic processes of arithmetic, proceeding from concrete to abstract, emphasizing the facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Daily oral and speed drills, and review work reinforce previously learned material. The major topics covered include word problems, rounding off numbers, fractions (division, changing to decimals), and decimals (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, reading & writing, changing to fractions, place values, comparing, and repeating). |
| History The emphasis in grade five covers the history, geography, economics, culture, society, and government of the United States from the Civil War to present time. Students will explore pivotal events in America’s past by examining primary sources of information, American documents, and the contributions of influential people of the time. |
English English 5 consists of a review and expansion of capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, and word studies rules. These are applied in construction of sentences and paragraphs. Meaningful compositions are prepared throughout the year allowing application of these skills. |
| Physical Education The third through sixth grade physical education course will give each student the opportunity to improve coordination, conditioning, body strength, specific skills for team sports as well as sportsmanship. Students learn through drills, relays, and playing team sports. Emphasis is placed on improving the students' individual skills. All grades participate in a Fitness Test with awards. |
Reading Reading 5 is a thematic, developmental reading program which reviews phonetic skills. Structural and study skills are presented and comprehension skills are deepened. Students are exposed to a variety of children's literature. Speed and accuracy are addressed through skill-check drills. |
| Science Students in grade five studying science see the plan of God as it is revealed in His orderly creation. The students are presented with things that they can see, observe, and understand in the world around them. Activities are included to support the learning of basic science. |
Spelling Grade Five Spelling capitalizes upon correct spelling, pronunciation, and usage of vocabulary words lifted from the Reading curriculum. Weekly word lists entries' parts of speech are identified, definitions are given, and meaningful activities to expand knowledge of usage are incorporated. Dictionary skills are reviewed and furthered. |
