Bible
The goal of the Bible program is to incorporate scripture memorization and Bible story lessons into meaningful, usable applications for each students' life. After the first nine-weeks period, students are given general instruction in locating scripture passages in their own Bibles. Drill and review are a significant part of the Bible lessons each week. |
Reading
The Reading instruction will be in direct correlation to the daily phonics lessons. This reinforces and puts to practical use the phonics rules. In addition to the practical application, students will be encouraged to incorporate outside reading activities and develop a love for good (edifying) literature. Students will be taught to use the phonics language clues to gain meaning from the written word. |

English
First Grade encompasses the bulk of phonics instruction. It will build on all of the letter/sound associations which were introduced/mastered in Kindergarten. In addition to the individual letter/sound associations, areas of emphasis will include: long and short vowel sounds, consonant blends, digraphs, diphthongs, generalizations of phonics rules, comprehension skills, contractions, compound words, syllabication, and recognition of sight words. The English content area also includes spelling and handwriting. The goal of handwriting instruction is that each student will follow proper letter formation and will write legibly. |
Mathematics
Students will work in seventeen selected areas of math. The areas include: counting, number writing, reading numbers, place value, addition and subtraction, problem solving, money, geometry, logical thinking, graphs, calendar, measurement (through rulers, clocks, fractions, temperature, liquids and solids, and multiplication.) Some of the areas will be newly introduced, some will be reinforced to build on what was introduced in Kindergarten, and in some areas mastery will be expected. Weekly tests on content areas, flash cards for addition and subtraction, and speed drills for addition and subtraction will be used as evaluation tools. |

Physical Education
The first and second grade physical education course will give each student the opportunity to learn and experience many forms of balance, coordination, interactive play, with an emphasis on loco-motor skills. Students learn through playing simple games such as relays and tag games, drills, parachute activities and body strengthening exercises. Emphasis is placed on improving the students' individual skills. Second grade is introduced to a Fitness Test with records kept for each student. |
Science
The study of God's world in the science curriculum for first grade is handled in the areas of: the senses, the heavens, mechanical and magnetic forces, growing things, wild and tame animals, characteristics of heat, air, matter, and sound, forces in weather, and teeth. The products of these science lessons are taught as facts, concepts, and principles. |

Spelling
Spelling instruction closely follows the phonetic word families and includes one sight word with each weekly lesson. As the students build their knowledge of the list words, the will be responsible for using those words in dictated sentences. |
History
History is taught in a manner so that students are presented facts which can be developed into concepts and principles. Much emphasis will be given to maps, Columbus, Native American Indians, first American settlements, the institution of American laws, the development of American schools, the benevolence of the One True God, families and their needs and wants. |
