Bible
Bible for Grade Four studies the life of Christ, the Holy Spirit, the life of Paul, and various New Testament books. The goal is to make the Word of God meaningful to the lives of the students. A memory verse is assigned each week.
English
Grade Four will study word usage, types of sentences, parts of speech, capitalization and punctuation. To put these facts into a practical realm, the class will be using this knowledge in writing letters, book reports and an encyclopedia report during the course of the year.
History
The curriculum in Grade Four begins with a nine-week study of our state, West Virginia. Several field trips are planned throughout the year to encourage knowledge and appreciation of our wonderful state. The history of the United States is covered from the Revolutionary War to World War II.
Mathematics
Daily oral and written drills are used to reinforce and add upon known addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication facts. Story problems and other life-related math skills are integrated throughout the curriculum.
Physical Education
The third through sixth grade physical education course will give each student the opportunity to improve coordination, conditioning, body strength, specific skills for team sports as well as sportsmanship. Students learn through drills, relays, and playing team sports. Emphasis is placed on improving the students' individual skills. All grades participate in a Fitness Test with awards.
Reading
Reading is a basic tool for every subject the student will encounter. Lessons are taught to emphasize and encourage good skills in silent and oral reading and reading for comprehension.
Science
Science not only give us important facts which impact our daily living, but also reveal the beauty and order of a universe designed by a loving God. Topics in Grade Four include: insects, plants, birds, matter, energy, geology, oceanography and astronomy.
Spelling
Phonics rules are reviewed along with a weekly list of words. Spelling difficulties are addressed by writing in a journal each week. Vocabulary enrichment plays a vital role in the total plan for Reading, English and Spelling.
