Over the last month, we’ve seen that hope as a name: “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father…” (Isaiah 9:6). Today the series culminates around the Prince of Peace.
Peace is often demonstrated through the sharing of a meal. If you’re at odds with a friend or family member, it’s helpful to seek peace while enjoying delicious food. Peace treaties have historically involved extravagant dinners. That’s what King David meant when he recognized that God prepares “a table before me in the presence of my enemies” (Psalm 23:5).
Jesus used this tactic with His disciples, the night before He was crucified: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid” (John 14:27). He then said, “This bread is My body broken for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19-20).
Nearly 2,000 years later, Jesus still invites us to His communion table of peace. Today’s communion service illustrates that glorious reality. (If you’re new to Bible Center, don’t worry. I’ll explain everything near the end of the service.)
Remember… hope has a name, and His name is Jesus.
