Welcome to church! We’re thrilled to have you with us, especially on this Mother’s Day.
Like the Golden Delicious apple, or the Strawberry Festival, or the Vandalia Gathering… Mother’s Day is intertwined with our West Virginia heritage. The holiday was unofficially celebrated in the early 1900s in Grafton, WV when Anna Jarvis held a special service to honor her mother who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War.
Congress originally rejected the proposal to make Mother’s Day an official holiday, joking they would then be forced to create a “Mother-In-Law’s Day.” However, Ms. Jarvis wasn’t amused by their poor humor. Her persistence eventually persuaded President Woodrow Wilson to declare it a national holiday in 1914, making it the third-largest card-sending holiday in the U.S.
On behalf of our pastors and staff, please know that we love, appreciate, and are praying for you. For many, this weekend is a time when we visit our moms and bring their favorite flower. If you’re a mom, please pick up your special gift from one of the tables as you exit.
For others, Mother’s Day can be a day of great sadness or grief. If this is you, please know that we love you, are here for you, and pray for God’s soothing grace in your life.
May today’s service encourage your heart and answer the question,
Why Mother’s Day?
