Pastor’s Letter

Dear Friends,

Welcome to church! I’m so glad you’re here.

Where were you on Sunday evening, March 9, 1986? Maybe you were glued to the evening news, hanging onto every word shared by President Reagan. Perhaps you were rocking out with your Walkman, listening to Kyrie by Mr. Mister or How Will I Know by Whitney Houston or Sara by Starship. Possibly you were gearing up for the release of the popular BMX movie Rad or the hit show Magnus. Perchance you were engrossed in a new book like Greed And Glory On Wall Street. Maybe you were munching on Funyuns and drowning in Mountain Dew while lost in an arcade game like Baluba-Louk No Densetsu or Mappy-Land. Perhaps you weren’t yet born.

On that cool evening, I was a scared kid standing in the baptismal in my church in Nitro, WV. The cool water reached almost to my neck as cameras flashed, Pastor Don said a few words, and then it happened… under the water I went! In the half-second that it took to re-emerge and catch my breath, the sound of our church’s congregational singing filled the room, “I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus; No turning back, no turning back.”

Baptism conjures up many good memories for me. What about you? Have you seen a baptism? Have you been baptized? Why be baptized? That’s what I’m talking about today.

With you for the gospel and for the city,

Matt Friend • Senior Pastor
