Pastor’s Letter

Dear Friends,

Welcome to church! I’m so glad you’re here. Feel free to grab a cup of coffee and snack from the lobby and make yourself at home.

This summer we are working through a special Summer in the Psalms sermon series, learning how to get honest with God in prayer and process our God-given emotions biblically.

Have you ever been ashamed of something you did, said, or even thought about doing or saying? Drowning in shame can feel like sinking in quicksand. When we feel shame, it’s hard to look in the mirror; our true selves seem too ugly to bear. Dr. Dan B. Allender acknowledges, “To be covered with shame is to feel [one’s] self engulfed in something disgusting, even hideous. It may seem extreme, but the experience of shame feels like a prolonged, tortuous death.”

Shame has been defined as the traumatic exposure of nakedness—for example, when a person does something harmful, commits a blunder, or is caught in some flaw of appearance. It’s a sense of deficiency or foolishness.

So, what do we do about our shame? Is there a way out, a way forward, a way up?

Today Psalm 32 will teach us how to identify the shame in our hearts, and what to do about it. If you’re new to Christianity, the remedy will amaze you. If you’re a long-time Christian and/or church attender, the answer may surprise you.

Standing with you in need of God’s mercy,

Matt Friend • Senior Pastor
